GELM Annex built up with weathering steel

2020-01-17
This weather-resistant steel project involves the second commission of Guardería Ecológicala Mina (GELM). Like the first intervention, the structure was abandoned for more than 20 years and was part of a building dedicated to providing professional guidance and facilities for volunteers. The building is used for entertainment and physical education on the first floor and for beauty on the second floor.
This weathering steel project involves the second commission of Guardería Ecológicala Mina (GELM). Like the first intervention, the structure was abandoned for more than 20 years and was part of a building dedicated to providing professional guidance and facilities for volunteers. The building is used for entertainment and physical education on the first floor and for beauty on the second floor.
Now, the structure will become a multifunctional hall wrapped in Corten steel, where parents can hold meetings and seminars and train teachers; there is also a warehouse on the first floor to support other schools in the client's area .
Given that this design and construction award was awarded for six months, the building presented some challenges in terms of cost and time, a concept that required the commission to commission. In terms of design, the second floor has visual control over the original single-level preschool and children's entertainment area. Added a cement slab roof that extends to the existing staircase to protect it from rain and sun, and places projection glass across the play area and the existing large bamboo. Formally, the volume will serve as a display or display for preschool children, arousing different readings by users, providing a pleasant field of view, while allowing light to enter the space.
Coordinating the rest of the building with the challenges associated with demolition, we decided to cover the building with a high-strength, low-maintenance Corten steel skin, which was perforated in a manner related to the bamboo trees next to the building. The skin filters light into space while establishing a dialogue with the environment. Referring to the colors used in the kindergarten, stained glass strips are incorporated into the outer shell of the shell, allowing colored light to dip into the interior space.
